Some exciting news, but first a few thoughts…
There’s these milestones that we have in our mind as we progress in our chosen career. A series of achievements that indicate our success or indeed lack of it. We judge ourselves by these arbitrary checkpoints and if we fail to hit them we become despondent and lose all faith in our abilities. That’s not just me right?
Cool.
For voice actors it may be a particular role, personally I will never be happy until I’m the voice of Guinness but that’s my own millstone. It may be the number of jobs completed or being represented by an amazing agent.
Whatever your particular tick box don’t make it the be all and end all of your career. Our lives are moveable feasts and to treat such an important aspect of it - such as your career - with inflexibility is doing yourself a disservice.
I used to think I’d never be taken seriously as a voice actor if I wasn’t doing every aspect of voiceover work. If I hadn’t mastered audiobooks, IVR, promos, animation, gaming etc then I was useless. Now, yes there are voice artists out there who do all this and they do it very very well - Katie Flamman I’m looking at you. I was giving myself too much pressure and because of this I was frozen in indecision and inaction. The old spectre of imposter syndrome floating around rattling it’s chains and making sure I didn’t do any of this.
I figured out what it is I’m good at and what direction I want to take my career in. I’m aching to be a voice actor in video games and this is me throwing it out into the multiverse. Luckily I have some help along the way. I’ve recently been added to the amazing roster of voices over at Voicefox. A fantastic agency with a knowledgeable and connected agent at the helm in the form of Emily Dean.
I know there’s still a lot of work to be done on my end. I’m not resting on my laurels now that I’ve reached this checkpoint, there’s still more to explore and boss battles to be fought.
Here’s to the fight!
